Some people say that shoes make an outfit, but I respectfully disagree. While I won’t ever turn down a strappy sandal or a vegan leather boot, there’s just something essential about a handbag that I love.
And I really do mean essential: I carry a lot of things, so I have rather high standards for the purses I use. A cursory glance in the tote I’m using today will reveal a slew of interesting and potentially embarrassing chotskies, from measuring tape (you never know when you’ll need to take dimensions, ladies), to lipstick, to a large stack of uncategorized receipts.
This year, I’m looking forward to purchasing a mix of oversized and crossbody bags that will suit my needs this spring and summer. While I don’t mind investing in a nice, versatile bag that I plan to wear for years, I’ve included a range of price options because treating yourself should never be cost-prohibitive!
1. Camila Cork Shoulder Wallet in Black by Rok Cork, $84
This is a great option for formal events when used as a clutch (summer weddings, anyone?), but you can also use the optional strap to convert it to a crossbody.
2. Dulce Clutch & Chain Grid by Lee Coren, $60
Lee Coren’s bags are 100% vegan and handmade. The Dulce Clutch features a luxuriously soft Italian faux suede that you have to feel to believe (I’ll confess that I own the Everything Foldover Clutch). Just toss in your phone, keys, and wallet, and you’re ready for a night out.
3. The Riley by Filbert, $475
If you’ve got some money to spend, then look no further than Filbert’s chic Riley bag to fulfill all your toting needs. This workhorse features a padded laptop compartment, 2 interior side pockets, a large zippered compartment, and a front zip pocket. Made with vegan leather and organic cotton lining to boot.
4. Opia by Matt & Nat, $95
The first vegan, sustainable bag I purchased was from Matt & Nat, so I have a special affinity for this Montreal-based vegan company. The Opia crossbody is another great crossbody option, and its minimalist design lends it to basically any outfit.
5. Bobby Tote Jute Bag by rHope, $25
This is a canvas tote bag with vegan leather handles was made in India by women artisans. rHope works with women and their families to provide a livelihood and improved standard of living.
6. Resist Pocket Bum Bag by Hipsters for Sisters, $125
For all of you that wear your activism on your sleeve (ahem, belt), this belt bag made with upcycled vintage denim is a must. This belt bag is hands-free, so just secure it around your waist and forget about it!
7. Madison by Gunas New York, $175
Offered in over ten colors, this bag is made from 100% vegan textured eco-polyurethane and a recycled plastic bottle lining. You definitely won’t run out of storage room with this bag!
8. Weekender Bag by CanopeVerde, $229
If you have some vacations planned for this summer, you can never go wrong with a spacious weekender bag. Made from organic cotton and PVC-free vegan leather, this is a great option for any overnight trips you have in store.
