I have been on a chickpea kick lately and I can only blame myself…I feed my addiction to these heavenly beans with bags and cans at a time. It’s to a point where I am actually slightly upset if I realize we don’t have any in the pantry–I thought two bags a week would be enough! **sighs** Anyway, I think I have maternally passed my garbanzo preference to our fur baby Wednesday. She loves to snack on them and since we always have them around and they are a great protein source I guess it’s OK to share—sometimes—if she’s behaving—and I am in a particularly giving mood…just kidding! Kind of.
Here is a pup-approved and simple recipe for whipping up some chickpeas into the perfect pup treat! These are especially great for little dogs and for use as training treats as they are completely natural and delicious!
PB & Garbanzo Doggie Treats
Yields about 12 droplets
1 cup chickpeas
2 tbsp. organic, smooth peanut butter
1.5 cups organic whole wheat flour
1/2 cup water
1 tsp. vanilla extract
Preheat oven to 400F
Mix chickpeas (cooked) and peanut butter in a food processor until smooth
Add flour a half cup at a time and mix well
Add water and vanilla to mixture and mix until smooth
Drop tiny rounds onto a well-greased cookie sheet and “point” the tops with a spoon (this part is only for looks and will be destroyed as soon as your pup catches wind of this delicious treat anyway, so don’t stress)
Bake for 15 minutes of until the outside edges are a light, golden brown
Cool completely and store in a sealed container in the refrigerator
P.S.–If you add a bit of salt and sugar to whatever dough you may have left over, this dough makes amazing cookies for humans!
