It is already time to start daydreaming about which Fall/Winter 2019 beauty trends you’re going to try (a.k.a. one of my favorite times of year!). Seriously, cool weather beauty is like Christmas for beauty lovers because the trends of the season never fail to feel so indulgent after the necessarily lighter fare of spring and summer. And is it just me, or does it feel like we all collectively rediscover the magic of classic red lips around this time? Perhaps one of the most exciting parts of fall and winter beauty for this year, however, is the self-aware infusion of whimsy—from Euphoria-inspired eye makeup to ultra-shiny lips! Of course, there is also a fair share of user-friendly, office-friendly looks, but it’s nice to have permission to really dazzle, especially in our era of minimalism (not hating on minimalism, though!) and gloomy headlines (oh so very gloomy headlines). Although makeup may seem frivolous, more so than ever, I would argue that a little frivolity is one way to embrace life, to heal ourselves through joy in the little things…so if you love it, go ahead and love it all the way!
Best Fall & Winter 2019 Makeup Trends
Matte Red Lips
Matte Red lips seen at Helmut Lang
Surprise! Red lips are in for fall. Okay, okay, maybe that’s not such breaking news but rather an excuse to embrace your glamorous, old-Hollywood side in a gorgeous, modern way (thanks to the latest lip-friendly formulas). As you may expect, matte formulas still reign supreme, but it’s getting easier to find a great matte lipstick that doesn’t leave your pout feeling parched. For example, Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Lipstick provides a soft matte finish, rather than a flat matte finish, and the formula amplifies the appearance of lips while not being overly drying. P.S. If you’ve yet to have good luck with a true red lipstick but long for the glamour of a bold, bright lip, consider opting for a red that’s a pink or deep coral in disguise (I love Amazing Grace).

Outdoorsy Flush of Blush
A beautiful feminine flush seen at Chanel
A blooming, youthful flush of blush was seen at multiple F/W ’19 shows backstage. This is an update to the no-makeup makeup look with plenty of room to amp up the illusion of post-yoga glow. For a natural look, use a large brush to sweep powdered blush around the apples of the cheeks (rather than along the cheekbone).
Smoky Neutrals
Soft, smoky neutral at Elie Saab
Here’s a look that transcends time and is truly universally flattering. It offers the sexy, diffused beauty of a smoky eye without the heaviness that suggests you’re going clubbing. In other words, these autumn-toned smoky neutrals are perfect for the office or any setting where you want to look polished but not overly made-up. But speaking of the club, this look transitions seamlessly from day to night with just a little boost of smokiness (i.e., adding darker tones) and some liquid liner!
Lily Lolo Laid Bare Eye Palette
Euphoria-Inspired Eyes
Creative eyes at Anna Sui
Despite the heavy subject matter of the HBO show Euphoria, the show managed to launch a super pretty, whimsical makeup trend involving glitter and bright eye makeup. Of course, we at Peaceful Dumpling endorse only biodegradable glitter (microplastics are not glam!). The look is note subtle–it’s creative, eye-catching, and anything but melancholic. It’s, well, euphoric!

High-Shine Lips
Super shiny lips at Rodarte
It feels like it has been a while since super shiny lips were en vogue, and I get why lip gloss has gotten a bad rep over the years. Sometimes, it can be a little … unpredictable. Will it leave a gorgeous stain? Will it disappear in 60 seconds? Will it become a sticky mess? Fortunately, as with lipstick, formulas have improved quite a bit—think less sticky, more moisturizing. To rock this trend to its most glorious extent, seek out lipgloss with moisturizing elements, like this option from Pacifica, which is formulated with coconut oil and antioxidants and leaves a non-tacky finish.
