I Tried Delta 8 THC. Here's What Happened

June 23, 2021

Marijuana laws are rapidly changing across the states, with more than 34 legalizing its use either medically or recreationally. And many states have decriminalized the substance altogether. Only a handful of states prohibit marijuana entirely (seven, as I write this).

Despite growing up in a state where marijuana is both fully illegal and criminalized, I am 420-friendly. My family and friends are, too. (I would argue that some are perhaps too 420-friendly, but live and let live, right)?

I am quite sensitive to substances due to my general anxiety. For a while sobriety was my only option, as any deviation from a sober state seemed to exacerbate my symptoms. Over time, I gave up caffeine, alcohol, and refined sugars as well. But as I learned more about myself, dedicated myself to a meditation practice and managed my condition successfully, I started slowly reintroducing some of these fun indulgences into my life. I strive to strike a balance between work and play, after all.

I recently received news that academic research my brother and I conducted is accepted to the National Communications Association. I received a bottle of vegan Delta-8 THC gummies from a loved one to congratulate me.

What is Delta 8 THC?

Delta-8, formally called delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol, is a form of THC that produces effects like Delta-9 THC. Delta-9 THC is the main chemical compound in marijuana that makes users experience a “high” feeling. When folks discuss THC, they are likely referring to Delta-9 THC, or “common” THC. But both Delta-8 and Delta-9 THC compounds produce similar euphoric feelings when inhaled or ingested.

Legality

There is legal incentive for many to use Delta-8 instead of Delta-9. Because of the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp is no longer categorized with cannabis. And since Delta-8 can be extracted from hemp, Delta-8 can be considered federally legal. So, folks in states where marijuana is criminalized have been given a bit of a loophole. For the time being, anyway.

Potency

If you’re familiar with Delta-9 edibles, you may find Delta-8 edibles to be much weaker. But it is important to keep in mind that edibles affect everyone differently, based on myriad factors. I suggest taking your time, doing your research, and ensuring you are in a safe space when experimenting with any THC product.

My Delta-8 edibles are 25 mgs and I was a bit nervous to take the whole dose. But I did it. I was safe at home. All my work and animal caregiving chores complete, I gave myself permission to lean into the new experience.

The result? Incredibly chill. No anxiety or paranoia, mild increase in appetite. I felt cozy and relaxed and later had a fabulous night of sleep. Apparently many consumers claim that Delta-8 helps with insomnia and symptoms of pain. (Based on reviews of products, online). But it should be noted that there is not a lot of clinical research on Delta-8 yet.

Personally, I think its pretty cool that there is a “middle ground” for folks who don’t like the extreme effects caused by common THC but don’t want to be complete THC teetotalers. But the decision to try is deeply personal. What do you think, would you give it a go?
