The popular mulled wine drink is a lovable beverage drunk during this time of the year. It originated from the old days during the 2nd century when the Romans and their love of wine spread across Europe. This aromatic drink was made whenever they didn’t have a successful harvest or had leftover wine and started mulling them together with spices to make them more tasteful. It helps to keep the body warm during the cold and is health beneficial from all the spices. For this version, enjoy a non-alcoholic jolly brew and feel free to play around with your choice of favorite spices!
- 2x hibiscus tea bags
- 6 cups water
- 1 thumb fresh ginger
- choice of sweetener (as needed)
- 1/2 apple (sliced)
- 1x orange
- 5-6x lemon slices
- 1x cinnamon bark stick
- 2-3x bay leaves
- 5-6x cloves
- 1x rosemary
- 2-3x star anise
- Handful of dried mulberries (or raisins) - optional
Directions
1. In a big pot, bring your water to boil and add your tea bags. Brew them until your water starts looking like wine in no time.
2. While waiting, stud your cloves onto your orange (that is cut into half) and pop them over onto your pot.
3. Cut your ginger into coins and bruise them to release more flavor and invite them to join the boiling party alongside with your other fruit (lemon and apple) slices and the rest of your spices (cinnamon bark, star anise), dried fruits (mulberries or raisins).
4. Simply let them simmer for about 15–20 minutes until your whole house smells festive!
5. In the last 5 minutes, I like adding the rosemary last then pour over onto your favorite mug décor with the soaked rosemary, cinnamon stick, some fruit slices and spices to enjoy the Christmas mood with this heart warming drink!
