Growing up, I was forever fascinated by the Cannes Film Festival. Sure, the Oscars were cool, but nothing ignited my fantasies of glamour like the seemingly endless party happening in southern France. I have probably watched the Pardon My French Cannes episode ten times (Garance makes everything fun!). There’s just something magical about the festival—the jewels, the frocks, the palm trees, the flashing bulbs…okay, sounds a lot like Hollywood, but just humor me 😉
Cannes Film Festival 2017 had no shortage of dramatic glamour. Gowns seemed even more lavishly extra than usual, and all of my celeb girl crushes were slaying. (You’ll always have my heart, Nicole K.) I was especially excited to notice that several of the makeup looks, while flawless, seemed wearable for less opulent occasions. The vast majority of the makeup at Cannes could translate to a standard night out, no couture necessary.
Here, I share three of my favorite Cannes Film Festival makeup looks (so hard to choose!) and detail how to recreate the looks using cruelty-free, vegan, and natural makeup. May they inspire you to channel your inner modern film goddess!
Jordan Dunn—Glowing to the Moon and Back
Was there ever a more appropriate look about which to say, that glow tho?! Not for the faint of heart, this youthful look features a dewy foundation topped with highlighter. For best results, apply an illuminating primer before your dewy foundation (more glow!). Dab cream blush on your cheeks, and blend a liquid highlighter on your chin, down your nose, and on the apples of your cheeks. Blend, blend, blend. Follow with a wash of shimmery gold shadow on the entire eyelid–go big or go home with that gold! Finish the look with black liner, several coats of mascara, and a neutral lip.
Try it with: Juice Beauty Illuminating Primer, Lily Lolo BB Cream, Kani Galaxy Milk—Illuminated Beauty Oil, HAN Skin Care Eyeshadow in Golden Glow.
Jessica Chastain—Classic in a Red Lip and Subtle Smoky Eye
Jessica’s look combines a timeless red lip with a soft, metallic smoky eye. After you’ve perfected your base, apply a shimmery blush with a delicate touch. Using a metallic eyeshadow palette, apply a medium shade across your eyelid and a darker shade into the outer crease. Follow with a black pencil liner and smudge with the tip of a finger. Finish your look with a bright red lip and a touch of gloss.
Try it with: Lily Lolo Pedal to the Metal Eye Palette, Red Apple Lipstick in Hollypeño
Emily Ratajkowski—Smoldering with a Fierce Cat Eye and Tawny Lip
EmRata, please leave some hotness for the rest of us! The three major components to nailing this sun-kissed look: bronze cheek, earth-toned lip, and exaggerated black cat eye.
After applying your base, apply a bronzer to the entire length of your cheekbones, emphasizing your bone structure. Blend super well. Next, apply your eyeshadow—Emily is wearing a light shade on her lid and a slighter darker, warmer shade in her crease, but a gentle wash of a warm neutral that complements your skin will do the trick. Apply your cat eye: create a thin, even line along the eyelid, then extend the “flick” so that it’s almost in the same plane as the endpoint of your eyebrow. For this cat eye, don’t be afraid to make a slightly thicker flick. Follow with mascara and brows, and finish the look with a warm, earthy satin lip.
Try it with: Lily Lolo Bondo Bronzer and Shimmer, 100% Pure Long Last Liquid Eyeliner, Axiology Organic Lipstick in Fundamental
