Okay, I know celery and banana sounds really insane for a smoothie. I actually cannot stand celery on it’s own, and would lick off the peanut butter and raisins in kindergarten when they made us “ants on a log” at snack time. I got this recipe from one of the moderators at the Bananagirl Challenge Facebook page, Ana Mustafa (who is lovely, kind, and knowledgeable). I wanted to boost my calcium intake and she suggested I try blending celery and bananas together. In addition to calcium and magnesium, celery is rich in vitamin K and potassium, and have significant anti-inflammatory benefits.
I started out with 3 stalks of celery to about 7 bananas, and quickly added 4 more stalks because it tastes AMAZING. Now, I’ll stick a whole head of celery in with about 7-8 bananas. It’s refreshing, delicious and satisfying. I also really enjoy Banana romaine smoothies as well– they feel so hydrating (I sometimes add some strawberries in it too–so good!). Green smoothies are not gross, as I had mistakenly believed for years and I really hope more people will try them!
Celery Banana Smoothie
Ingredients:
1 Head of celery
7-8 bananas, peeled and frozen in chunks
Water
1. Chop the celery and blend with water to remove any chunkiness or stringy bits you may get otherwise.
2. Add the bananas! Blend and add more water if necessary.
That’s it! The flavor hits the salty sweet category and you can always add less celery and more bananas to adjust to your liking.
