We thought we couldn’t love Emma Watson any more than we already do, but then she went and proved us wrong. The Harry Potter actress has long been a passionate and vocal advocate for women’s rights, but she’s recently taken up a new cause that’s sure to inspire a new, but equally worthy, dialogue.
Watson is using her status as a style icon to promote sustainable fashion–clothing and accessories that are eco-friendly, cruelty-free, and produced in safe and fair working conditions. In 2015, she joined the Green Carpet Challenge, which asked celebrities to wear 100% sustainable pieces on the red carpet, debuting a Calvin Klein gown made of recycled plastic bottles. From there, Watson approached ZADY, a New York-based ethical clothing brand, to collaborate on a collection that reflects her progressive ethos.
And now, as the actress begins her press tour for her new movie, Beauty and the Beast, she’s created a special Instagram account to promote her ethically curated wardrobe. @the_press_tour showcases Watson’s chic and fashionable outfits while also highlighting brands that she supports. Her first post featured a stunning coat from designer Stella McCartney, “the world’s first luxury brand that is committed to producing products that do not use leather, skins, feathers, or fur. Instead, Stella has spent years developing ways of using materials such as regenerated cashmere, recycled fabrics, organic cotton, and forest-friendly fabrics.”
For a special showing of Beauty and The Beast in London, Watson wore this “bespoke @emiliawickstead structural, off-the-shoulder gown with inverted pleat train. The gown is made from end-of-line fabric sourced from a family-run, London business specializing in couture fabrics, and produced in Italy. These unwanted fabric pieces have been given a new lease of life; often irregular quantities of surplus or end-of-line fabrics cannot be sold and are destroyed. This piece was created in Emilia Wickstead’s London atelier, by an all-female team.”
Watson also featured vegan brand Susi Studio in a recent post, noting “Los Angeles-based @susistudio designs animal-free footwear using sustainable materials such as canvas, hemp, and faux leather produced from recycled plastic bottles. The focus of the brand is to inspire compassion towards humanity, animals, and the environment through creativity #30wears.”
While we’re big fans of her message, we hope that Watson will continue to incorporate more affordable options into the mix. As much as I’d love to wear a $5,000 jumpsuit, I’m definitely not in the position to afford it (plus, there’s a 100% chance that I’d spill coffee on it). It’s important to share that eco-friendly, compassionate wares are accessible to all people, not just celebrities. If you can relate, see my post on curating an ethical wardrobe without breaking the bank.
So Emma, when can I raid your closet???
