Increasingly, scientists and doctors are demonstrating that a plant-based diet may be one of the best ways to achieve optimal body weight. But even without the benefit of these studies, people switching to a vegan lifestyle discover this on their own–including Grammy-winning R&B star and self-described “hardcore vegan” Mýa!
The “Lady Marmalade” singer found that veganism helped her lose 30 pounds and was a boon to her overall health and wellbeing. The former vegetarian went vegan a few years ago as a way to challenge herself and quickly found that the lifestyle suited her perfectly. After learning about the horrors of factory farming, she was even more committed to remaining vegan and spreading the word–since coming across “more information about the truths and the harsh realities of treatment of animals … including seafood, including the dairy industry … it’s impossible to turn back,” she told PETA.
In an interview with SOHH, the R&B star explained her relationship to her vegan diet, stating that she’s still in the learning process: “This is brand new for me. It’s almost year two. I’m a freshie and I’m learning a lot as I go and I surround myself around other people that teach me all types of things and what I can possibly use or where to go. There’s vegan wine festivals and vegan food festivals.” Cheers to vegan wines!

In addition to connecting her to other wellness advocates, veganism is helping Mýa out in the hot & healthy bod department: “It’s definitely helping me because I don’t have to work out as hard. I still have to maintain a healthy physique so I still have work to do but it’s just not as difficult and I look better and feel better than I did a couple of years ago when I was not vegan.” (Liam Hemsworth also reports having an easier time at the gym thanks to his plant-loaded diet!)
Smoothies and raw dishes are staples in the singer’s healthy and colorful diet.
Her plant-based diet has also eliminated some her health concerns as well: “I’m no longer anemic. I’m intaking so many more healthy foods—obviously vegetables, nuts, greens, seeds that are iron-rich,” she told PETA. “Dairy causes mucus buildup, which is awful for singers. I don’t get sick! And my skin is clear. I lost 30 pounds.”
Fortunately, the singer is committed to veganism beyond the confines of her diet. Mýa believes that all living creatures deserve humane treatment and are not ours to use:
“It is a lifestyle for me and outside of just food, I’m practicing fashion and making sure I’m not wearing leather shoes and I have not worn furs since a long time ago. I have to be very conscious when I’m making decisions and saying I’m vegan because I have to be about it all the way and now that has given me some thought into creating certain things like home décor.” Yaasss, girl!
As she explained to Christy Reports, going vegan is ultimately about “preserving life.” In addition to human health, veganism addresses the strain conventional animal agriculture is putting on the planet. And as Mýa reminds us, there’s “no art without earth.”
