I recently attended a wedding that took place during the hottest part of the day with temperatures soaring, minimal shade, and all of the tables were outside with the sun’s full strength bearing down. Despite the heat (and dancing through the cupid shuffle) my makeup stayed flawless thanks to a few tricks I use to keep everything in place. In this post, I’ll share my tips on how to thoroughly heatproof your makeup.
Step 1. Skip the oils. Now, you all know of my obsession with facial oils, but just this once, you should avoid adding extra moisture to your face. Adding any extra slip to an already sweaty situation will only cause the makeup to disappear faster. On that note, you should also opt for an oil-free cleaser, toner, and a mattifying moisturizer.
Step 2. Use a non greasy sunscreen. Admittedly, it can be a difficult task to find just the right sunscreen that protects without adding shine, but if you’re going to be outside for long periods of time it’s a non-negotiable. Another option is to use a powder formulation, which will provide protection without the grease and can even be applied over makeup.
Step 3. Primer is key. A silicone based primer will cut down on shine, help your makeup last longer and keep your eyeshadows from creasing or fading. It also serves as a barrier between the humidity and your skin.
Step 4. Think minimalist. Use the least amount of base possible, like a tinted moisturizer or a BB cream. Then, gently press a lightweight, translucent powder into the skin to set makeup. If you are uncomfortable without full coverage, choose a matte, oil free foundation or even a mineral foundation.
Step 5. Build intensity in sheer layers. You can keep makeup lasting longer by strategically layering-for example, apply a cream blush and then set it with a matching powder. Use a sheer lip stain rather than a heavy lipstick that might bleed, and keep the shimmer to a minimum.
Step 6. Waterproof mascara. I always use waterproof mascara, whether I’m hiking outside or sitting on the couch. That’s because a waterproof formulation will help you avoid the dreaded raccoon effect, and it also holds curl better than regular formulations.
Step 7. Set it and forget it. If you’re planning on hitting the dance floor hard or it’s a particularly humid day, lightly mist your face with a setting spray to lock in makeup and keep colors looking as vibrant as when you first applied.
Step 8. Maintenance. You don’t have to haul around an entire Sephora store in your oversized purse, but at the very least keep a bit of powder and blotting sheets on hand. This way you can quickly cut down on shine with minimal touching up.
