Actress and dancer Jenna Dewan has glow for days. In addition to tearing it up on the dance floor (a.k.a. cardio!), Dewan follows a whole-foods plant-based diet rich in fiber, phytonutrients, and antioxidants.
Fortunately for those of us looking to Dewan for a little inspiration, Dewan’s staples are simple and easy to prepare at home—from hummus to green smoothies. In a recent video, she shared a few of her tips for making the perfect green smoothie—plus why they’re so awesome.
“So a lot of people ask me what is one thing I do to sort of keep energy throughout the day and be the healthiest version of myself that I can be, and I really swear by this: I do green smoothies,” she explained. “I drink them every morning. It’s wonderful. It’s great fiber, you get your veggies right off the bat, so you don’t have to worry about that so much. It’s great for picky eaters…I swear this will work for everybody.”
Dewan’s typical smoothie includes romaine, spinach, celery, cucumber, apples, pear, and banana. She recommends adding liquid to your blender first (she uses water, but vegan milk works, too) and then layering your fibrous veggies followed by your fruit. This will ensure optimal blending for a smooth smoothie. Dewan says that all of the fruit cancels out any bitterness from the greens, making the drink palatable for even those who don’t like veggies. To top it all off before blending, Dewan adds spirulina, a superfood that’s gotten some serious buzz for its high chlorophyll content and numerous health perks.
“If there’s one supplement I can tell you all to take is spirulina powder. It is alkalizing; it’s like a superfood for your blood, your oxygen, and your cells.” Spirulina is a blue-green algae that’s notable for its ability to help detox heavy metals, lower cholesterol, fight candida, and even encourage weight loss. That’s just the beginning–see more spirulina benefits here!
Sustainably-grown, non-irradiated spirulina powder.
You don’t have to follow Dewan’s exact smoothie recipe to incorporate spirulina into your diet. Add it to any smoothie!
Spirulina also stars in several green superfood powder blends, including Elle McPherson’s WelleCo The Super Elixir.
