It seems there are two extremes of popular makeup these days—ultra minimalist makeup (a pat of balm here, a touch of tinted moisture there) and what you could call “Instagram makeup” (brows that mean business and highlighter you can see from space). While my regular makeup routine lands somewhere in the middle, I’ve recently found myself gravitating towards the minimalist, glowy look that doesn’t require more than 10 minutes in front of the mirror every morning.
If you’re in the same boat, you may take inspiration from Jessica Alba’s simple everyday beauty routine that prioritizes skincare more than fancy blending techniques and the latest color palettes (not that we don’t love those, too!). Her skincare prep is travel-friendly, too, so take note, all of you jet setters!
Here’s how she gets the glow!
Alba begins by prepping her skin with a sonic cleansing brush (we like the FOREO Luna). She says this gives her a clean, smooth finish when her skin feels dry and flaky.
After cleansing her skin, Alba pops on a Joanna Vargas Bright Eye Hydrating Mask, which is formulated to tone and refresh the under-eye area. Able swears by them, explaining, “These are so fantastic because they’re so compact, and they’re like this jelly texture. They’re very hydrating, and they just feel very cooling and good underneath the eyes. They take down the appearance of crow’s feet and just make me feel more bright and awake.”
Next up is another fun gadget: Nurse Jamie Instant Uplift Tool. This massaging wand heats up and can be used to massage the face and body for improved circulation and tone. Alba loves using it under her chin and along her jawline. “It’s just kind of like giving your face a little workout.”
Alba follows her skincare prep with a few products from her own line, Honest Beauty. She uses Honest Beauty Everything Organic Facial Oil to moisturize. This blend of omega-rich plant oils can be worn under or over foundation or even mixed with foundation for barely-there coverage.
The only makeup Alba wears for this quick routine is a bit of concealer. Applying concealer to brighten her face a bit allows her to “not wear a full face of makeup and have the commitment of doing foundation everything else.”
Finally, Alba applies Honest Beauty Magic Balm to her lips. She also dabs a bit on the tops of her cheekbones and over her eyelids for a hint of highlight. For a multipurpose bee-free balm that will get you similar results, try Twinkle Apothecary Beauty Balm, a super-rich balm made with shea butter, rosehip, grapeseed, and red raspberry seed oils.
