High-rise straight-leg jeans, face-framing tendrils, and even Friends are making a comeback in 2020, and it can only mean one thing—we must be deeply nostalgic for the ’90s.
I’m okay with that.
Especially when it comes to beauty looks. Although I was far from wearing makeup during the actual ’90s, I can recall the sultry, taupe-ish color palettes that seemed at once so glamorous and unfussy. In other words, ’90s beauty (at least as I remember it) was universally flattering and accessible—you didn’t have to be an Instagram/beauty mogul to perfect the lewk, and it was even better if you applied it in the backseat of a moving car.
If you, too, feel like dabbling in a bit of ’90s-inspired makeup, run, don’t walk, to see model-musician Stormi Bree‘s beauty tips (no fanny pack required).
How to Achieve the Perfect ’90s Look in 2020
Think of the ’90s beauty revival as natural gorgeousness meets contemporary ~glow~ and skincare savviness (because obvs, we’re def not going back to the dark ages of applying toothpaste on our zits). The trick is to keep your base (foundation) modern—so lightweight, nourishing, radiant, and as natural as possible—while embracing the best parts of ’90s makeup.
Recently, Stormi Bree broke down her routine for Rosie Huntington-Whitely. Let’s take a look!
Brows
After you’ve concealed and applied your base (if using—Stormi doesn’t!) and/or blush, head for your brows. The brows in this look tend to take centerstage because everything else is relatively natural and subdued. Don’t be afraid to go bold with your brows while letting their natural texture show. Stormi’s brows are filled in and fluffy (you can see individual brow hairs). A tinted brow gel or pomade is the perfect foolproof option.

Bronze, Babe!
To keep her daytime makeup look as natural as possible, Stormi applies bronzer with a big fluffy brush—and uses the same product on her eyelids in place of eyeshadow. To elongate her eyes, Stormi applies the bronzer/eyeshadow on the outer corner of her eye with her eyes open. Next, she applies the same product underneath her bottom lashline. She says this serves as contouring for the eyes by enhancing their natural shape.
Optional Eyeliner & Kitty Flick
If you’d like to further enhance your eye, grab a basic black liquid eyeliner and add a kitty flick. If you’re rocking a daytime look and would like to keep things as subtle as possible, only line the outer half of the lashline, tapering the liner as you move toward the inner eye. Apply your favorite mascara.

Lippie time!
Okay, given that we’re in the ’90s now, it’s time for lip liner (you knew it was coming!). Fortunately, you don’t have to wear lip liner à la the ’90s (dark lip line paired with nude lip—no thanks!). Rather, use your lip liner strategically.
Grab a taupe-pink/peach lip liner and get contouring. Stormi never applies lip liner around her entire lip but only where it’s needed to even out the lip line (this helps keep the lip “open” rather than pinched looking). To accentuate the peaks of her top lip, she works from the inner center of her lips out—but the idea is to emphasize the natural character of your lips. So if your top lip is fuller than the bottom, emphasize the top lip or vice versa. You don’t need to try to give your lips a different shape. Lastly, she applies a dab of gloss to blend it all out.
