Read about the first day of my cleanse!
Day 2 Saturday
9:50 am I wake up feeling lighter than I had in weeks. The bathroom scale tells me I’ve lost 1.5 lbs since the day before and I do a little victory dance.
11:30 am Boyfriend and I head out to our usual farmer’s market at Morningside Park, where we do our weekly grocery shopping. Afterwards I stop by our local organic store and get a juice of carrots, spinach, beets, celery, cucumber, cabbage, parsley, garlic, cayenne. It’s delicious and surprisingly satisfying. I also notice how much more time I gain with cleansing–no need to cook and clean up! I almost don’t know what to do with all the extra time, especially since fasting makes me limp as a noodle and completely indisposed to work out.
1:30 pm Even though I had my “breakfast” just 1.5 hours earlier, I feel lightheaded and weak. I blend a banana, a single-serving packet of Justin’s organic peanut butter, a handful of blueberries, some ice cubes, and almond milk, while boyfriend–all rosy and sanguine from his hearty lunch–lectures me that it’s “cheating” because “it’s not juice.” I tell him it doesn’t matter because I follow my own rules whereby one non-dairy shake a day is okay. High-end juice brand Organic Avenue allows 1 small meal a day on their 3 day plan, and BluePrint plan has one cashew milk drink per day. Each 16 oz veggie juice (no apples or fruit) contains only about 90 calories, so I think it’s good to have one heartier shake (about 350 calories) in a day.
5:00 pm Boyfriend goes back to the organic store and brings a vegan chicken salad sandwich. He makes me sit next to him and I don’t resist when he offers me a bite. Or two. It hits my taste buds with a shock–oh my god, food tastes amazing.
5:15 pm I start making my “dinner,” which is a detox tea with a splash of organic cranberry juice to really flush out my system. Chilled and poured over ice, it tastes pleasantly tart, sweet, and refreshing. I have two cups.
6:00 pm Boyfriend and I are talking and I start pacing around the kitchen for no reason. Boyfriend says, “stop moving around everywhere, you look…hungry.”
7:40 pm Boyfriend tortures me by asking me to make him a salad out of the beautiful fresh vegetables we bought in the morning. Then when I ask him if I can have a bite, he lectures me again how it’s cheating. As soon as he gets dressed and goes out, I run to the pantry and sneak some roasted almonds, only to be caught dead when he comes back to get something.
8:00 pm I feel weak and hazy and have a cup of frozen blueberries to hold me over. I realize that time passes really slowly when you’re hungry. I sneak some more almonds, about 20 in all, or around 150 calories. I watch some HBO Go on the iPad to distract me and finally fall asleep around 2 am.
CHEATING: Some almonds, 1 cup of frozen blueberries, couple bites of vegan chicken salad sandwich.
