For my last beauty tutorial, I shared my love for festive, sparkly eye makeup. I went a little out of my comfort zone and tried a purple glitter eyeliner from Tarte’s Stop & Stare smolderEYES 6-piece Liner & Lash Set.
The set contains contains 5 liners—three skinny pencils (in black, green, and purple) and two chubby liners with built-in smudgers (in rose gold and taupe). Each liner is made with Tarte’s signature Amazonian clay—their special ingredient that prevents running and smudging. The liners glide on smoothly and may be smudged immediately after application. Alternatively, the skinny liners may be left in a crisp line. As will all waterproof, long-wear products, it takes a fair amount of time to remove the liners at the end of the day. (But this extra effort is arguably worth it for a smudge-free look!)
The skinny liners contain flecks of glitter while the chubby sticks are pure shimmer, ideal for a festive, party look. I also like glitter and shimmer formulas because they tend to be more forgiving. Matte shades are usually harder to blend and tend to make mistakes and uneven lines more obvious.
As with eye shadow, we must use colored eyeliner that will accentuate the natural color of the iris. Your best bet is to select a pigment opposite your iris on the color wheel. Often choosing eye makeup of the same color as the iris (unless we’re shading brown eyes with brown) will wash out the iris, i.e., the synthetic color will always win rather than nicely complement your natural beauty.
Unfortunately for me, I can’t really use the green liner from the bundle since I have greenish-blue eyes (their specific color eludes me, but I know they look funky with green makeup!). Colors ranging from rose to bronze to purple make green eyes pop, however. (From the Tarte set, green-eyed gals can use “Purple Garnet,” “Taupe,” “Rose Gold” and “Onyx.”)
If you have blue eyes, browns, oranges, and golds are especially complimentary. (From the Tarte set, try “Taupe,” “Rose Gold” and “Onyx.”)
Brown-eyed babes—you can wear just about any color, you lucky girls! Experiment with a spectrum of shades to find those best suited to you.
To create the look above with just these eyeliners, use your fingers to smudge “rose gold” on your moving eyelid and pat “taupe” into your crease. After the color sets, apply “purple garnet” to the upper and lower lash line. Curl lashes and apply two coats of mascara.
