Here is the story of how Reiki initiation transformed my life instantly, how my mom heals any sickness of mine within minutes and over thousands of kilometers between us, and how crucial regular practice is to my whole well-being.
Several days after my aunt had initiated me into Reiki, I asked her with tears in my eyes: “auntie, you saw me struggling all these years, and the solution that would ease my tension and pain was always so near… Why didn’t you bring me to Reiki sooner?” She replied that you can never convince someone to try Reiki. The person has to come to it on their own. When you are ready to connect to the energy of Reiki you will find it, and it will find you as well. But you must be ready, willing, trusting and feel the calling to do so. Maybe you reading this article means you also hear this calling?
My aunt is a Reiki master. I have been hearing about it all my life, and, to be honest, I cannot come up with one reason why I did not consider getting initiated sooner. I never had anything against it. This just shows that when it’s not the right time, it’s not gonna happen. Since early childhood, in spite of having an amazing loving family doing their best to give us everything they could, I felt disconnected from others, different, weird, misunderstood, and I did not understand the world in return.
This brought up a lot of frustration and agitation within me. As I had no skills of managing my emotions whatsoever, my reactions and how I was treating my loved ones sank me deeper into guilt and self-judgement. It was a mental loop, a pattern that, I now know, only self-love and self-acceptance can break. If you do not forgive yourself for not being at your best, the cycle continues.
In my early twenties I reached out to my aunt, and she did the Reiki initiation ceremony for me. I cried so much as years of pain flushed out of my body. When I stepped outside, the world was different. It was friendly, welcoming, loving of me. People no longer felt like a threat, and I felt safe, relaxed, hopeful, and light… so light. It felt like I was walking on clouds. And, don’t laugh, but for the first time in my life I was not afraid of rain worms (yes, it’s a thing). It opened my eyes to how much easier it is possible to live, breathe, walk, think and feel.
Years have passed. I have been through some life lessons and was not always making the best choices. One day I remembered about Reiki, and realized that I have forgotten about it for around two years! There are energies that want to attach to us and keep us stagnant, submerged into trauma and limitations. These energies are, for example, the negative thoughts we are getting throughout the day. They need a host, and they look for and feed on weakness. When you allow them to attach to you they can cloud your judgment and memory.
I have slid back into an emotional turmoil, and it made me forget about the power to help and heal myself. I remembered… And so I started my healing. My life has undergone a truly magical transformation into living in love and in peace with life, myself and others. But now, it’s about Reiki.
If you’d like to read about Reiki, I recommend Eileen Day McKusick’s Electric Body Electric Health. It links science with spirituality so beautifully. I love how it expanded my understanding of what I personally feel. The book is not about Reiki per se, but it will enhance your understanding of all energetic healing practices, and then you pick the one that resonates with you the most.
My mom is a Reiki healer as well. We live in different countries. I try not to bother my mom with minor issues of mine, but I sometimes reach out to her when I am in serious pain or have very rough symptoms, like the ones painkillers can’t fix (I actually avoid medications as much as possible). She distantly heals me with Reiki, and within minutes I either finally am able to rest and fall asleep, or the pain lessens or goes away completely. This has become such a common thing for the two of us, but when I write about it now, I think it may seem miraculous to many.
Reiki is a miracle from our limited perspective on life and our own energetic capabilities (which is not our fault, as we are just not properly educated on our own power). On the other hand, Reiki is the most natural thing there is. Reiki is the practice that connects you to the eternal life force, that surrounds and powers up all of the Universe, and it teaches you how to use it for good, treating yourself and others. It’s the energy of love and life, and Reiki is a method of directing this energy with your own hands, welcoming more of this love and life force into your body and life.
I see Reiki as cleansing, dissolving traumas, pain, social conditioning and limitations we have placed on ourselves, with love. This opens us up to our true nature as the magical and loving beings that we are. It helps us live the life we are meant to live, in connection with ourselves, our body, our talents, our purpose and each other.
I am sending you lots of love, no matter when you are reading this.
