It’s no secret that we adore Rooney Mara at Peaceful Dumpling–from her gothy ballerina aesthetic to her all-vegan clothing line. Now that it’s October, I’m really feeling her gloomy-glam vibes. Lucky for us, the actress and fashion visionary recently shared some of her vegan beauty and wellness must-haves with Bazaar—and we’re so here for it! Keep reading to glean her best tips and tools.
Here’s Rooney with makeup by her longtime friend and Chanel artist, Kate Lee. So chic.
Gorgeous, radiant skin begins on the inside.
Rooney Mara has been vegan for over seven years, and largely credits her clear, problem-free skin to her major lifestyle choices: “My skin is good, but it’s all about genetics and lifestyle—I’m vegan, gluten-free, don’t really drink, and sleep a lot.” Mara’s favorite foods are fruits and vegetables (and kombucha!), but she doesn’t deny herself a treat of vegan frozen yogurt. “Frozen yogurt is my favorite. It was one of the hardest things to give up when I went vegan, so finding [vegan fro-yo] was really exciting for me.”

Investments in quality skincare pay off.
Even the healthiest skin can benefit from a few incredible products, of course. Mara swears by Carasoin Cold Fusion Intense Moisture, a unique, completely cold-pressed face cream from Carasoin Day Spa in West Hollywood that quickly gained a national following so intense that the spa has trouble keeping the product stocked. “You keep it in the fridge, and when you apply it, it just melts into your face,” Mara explains.
When her refrigerated cream isn’t handy, Mara relies on Herbivore Botanicals Phoenix Regenerating Oil, a blend of ethically sourced CoQ10 and rose hip oil to enhance collagen while reducing the appearance of fine lines.
Mara protects her fair complexion with Actinica Sun Protection, a Swiss formula so powerful that “you can basically put it on, go lie in the sun, and not get any color,” Mara says. “Not that I would do that.”
Pamper your hair with cruelty-free conditioning.
Like most actresses, Mara’s hair has gone through a fair amount of processing (read: damage), but she’s revived hers with cruelty-free Virtue products.
Virtue Labs Virtue Full Conditioner promises to moisturize flat, thin, and fine hair without weighing it down, allowing hair to have maximum volume. “My hair has gone through a lot,” Mara explains. “As soon as I began using these products, it started feeling like hair again. And I was happy to hear that it’s cruelty-free.”
Vary your exercise routine for best results (and the most enjoyment!)—and find a mindfulness practice that works best for you.
Mara notes that she hikes, attends hot yoga, practices ballet, and takes The Class with Taryn Toomey, which is “like therapy,” she says. She also practices Vedic meditation—a simple style of mediation that requires sitting in a chair with your eyes closed as you silently repeat a mantra. The idea is to shed meditation accessories—special pillows, audio tracks, etc.—and meditate in a way that feels accessible and natural.
Embrace your signature lewk.
Mara’s standout features include her bold brows and her delicate features, and she plays up this enchanting contrast by enhancing her brows and wearing a dark, moody makeup palette, including deep red lips and nails: “I’m really drawn to dark lipstick—anything with an early-’90s goth vibe. I love berry tones.”
Deborah Lippmann Gel Lab Pro Nail Polish–a deep berry shade that’s as classy as it is edgy, a perfect choice for cooler weather!
100% Pure Lip & Cheek Tint—Cocoa Berry–an all-natural, fruit-pigmented formula that nourishes skin while adding gorgeous color.
Alima Pure Natural Definition Brow Pencil–a smooth and blendable formula that allows for precise, natural-looking application.
“I really don’t wear much makeup. My eyebrows are the only thing I care about,” Mara admits. “I get them tinted. Sometimes I even do it myself.” In lieu of getting your brows tinted, consider mastering a brow pencil for an easy-to-erase option.
