Fun fact: I’m a sympathetic crier. This means when I see someone else cry, even on TV, I immediately cry, too. I cry over every sentimental Facebook post or commercial, and I know I’m not alone. If you’re a sensitive dumpling like I am, then you have high expectations for your mascara. Finding a vegan mascara to handle my waterworks was once a holy grail quest. Lucky for us, now there are many vegan mascara options, some of which are water resistant!
Vegan Mascara for a Falsie Effect
Blinc, $26.00
Behold the holy grail. This vegan mascara has gotten me through heavy crying sessions. In fact, after I ran a half-marathon in a costume and full makeup, the mascara still looked so good that someone asked if I was wearing false lashes! And I haven’t even tried the lash primer yet, which is purported to create an even more dramatic look! Blinc is a cruelty-free company. They have an original formula and an “amplified” one, both vegan. The original formula comes in dark blue, purple, and green, in addition to the usual black and brown shades.
Why it’s the best: it has a “tubing” technology that wraps around your lashes. The fibers give lashes quite a bit of length! Water alone won’t remove them, but if you gently rub the lashes with water, the tubes slip right off without damaging them! So go ahead and cry—just don’t rub your eyes! This mascara is my go-to forever.
Vegan Mascara for Everyday Wear
Pacifica Stellar Gaze, $14.00
Pacifca is an all-vegan company. In addition to makeup, they have great hair, skin, and nail products, too! They have three notable mascaras. Stellar Gaze is one of the most popular.
Vegan Mascara for Length & Water Resistance
Pacifica Aquarian Gaze, $14.00
Aquarian Gaze is the water-resistant variation. It is available in both black and deep blue. This mascara gives lots of length and looks great!
Vegan Mascara for Big Volume *and* Length
Pacifica Dream Big, $16.00
I’ve also tried Pacifica’s Dream Big mascara, whose brush wand extends and contracts with a twist of the handle, so you can choose to add volume, length, or both in turn!
Vegan Mascara for a Soft, Clump-Free Look
Rejuva Minerals Water Resistant Mega Lash, $21.95 (on sale for $16.50)
I recently got this in the Vegan Cuts quarterly makeup box. Note that it is water resistant and not waterproof. I haven’t tested this out with a big cry yet, but it definitely still looks good at the end of the day. I liked that my lashes remained soft and the mascara easily washed away with just my regular face wash routine. The best part is that the results are similar to Too Faced’s Better Than Sex Mascara, which gives lashes a long and voluminous look without clumping.
Vegan Mascara for Glam Drama
Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara, $23.00
The mascara itself, I must say, is not waterproof but does give quite a dramatic effect. No wonder it has so many fans! Too Faced is committed to being cruelty-free, and the mascara itself is vegan, but Too Faced’s parent company tests on animals. I’ve heard compelling reasons both for and against supporting brands with parent companies who aren’t cruelty-free, and I respect each dumpling’s personal choice. I myself used it before they were acquired, and whether I support them in the future or not, it’s nice to know that there are alternatives like Rejuva, above.
Vegan Mascara for Green Beauty Purists (Bonus: It smells like chocolate!)
100% Pure Fruit Pigmented Ultra Lengthening Mascara (in dark chocolate), $26.00
I have yet to try this one, but I plan to! This brand boasts truly natural ingredients. I’ve tried their blush and lipstick. They use fruit pigments, which means their products smell amazing and not chemical. The mascara supposedly smells like chocolate! Can’t wait!
Vegan Mascara for Rainy Days
Lush Eyes Right Mascara, $19.95
Another one I want to try. This one features wheatgrass in its base and claims to be smudge proof, even in the rain.
