For many people, skin care feels like a losing battle. No matter how many skin care products you try, the acne resurfaces, the fine lines appear deeper, the uneven skin tone even more blotchy. Yet, we continue to search for bulletproof solution that will give us the airbrushed complexion we’ve always wanted.
Maybe I’m projecting a little bit since the above has been the story of my life since I was a teenager. But for the past few years, I’ve been experimenting with vegan serums; usually a concentrated blend of antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, and hydrators, these products can be targeted for very specific functions (reducing redness, protecting against sun damage, etc.). After using serums for a year, I’ve concluded that they’re a welcome addition to anyone’s skin routine–as long as you’re using the right product for your skin type.
Best Vegan Serum for Anti-Aging
Green Apple Age Defy Serum by Juice Beauty, $58
This serum by Juice Beauty does it all. Thanks to the addition of organic green apples, it helps brighten aging and sun-damaged skin. You can also look forward to reduced fine lines and overall firmer skin. I love this stuff because I can feel it working the minute it’s applied.
Vitamin Sea Serum by Osea, $68
Boasting a powerful cocktail of hyaluronic acid (a moisture-binding ingredient that keeps your skin supple and hydrated), turmeric, and green tea, this serum by OSEA also features a variety of organic seaweeds. Yes, seaweed! Algae provides key vitamins and minerals that help protect and renew aging skin.
Best Vegan Serum for Acneic Skin
Spot Treatment by Osmia Organics, $22
Osmia’s Spot Treatment Serum contains evening primrose oil, which has a calming effect on acne. Unlike other spot treatments that target blemishes, this serum does not strip skin of its oil. This is a great product to pack in your purse or suitcase for on-the-go spot treatment.
Herbal Balancing Serum by Apoterra, $38
This Herbal Balancing Serum lives up to its name–over 12 active botanicals work together to heal existing pimples, fight the bacteria that cause acne, and help reduce redness and scarring post-blemish.
Best Vegan Serum for Dry Skin
Ghost Oil by Poetic Blend, $49.99
I received this oil in my Petit Vour box last year, and I’ve been savoring it ever since. This oil is unscented and light as air–with a short ingredient list: squalane oil, coconut oil, camellia flower oil, safflower oil, and apricot kernel seed oil. If you buy this, prepare to wake up with smooth and moisturized skin!
Antioxidant Serum by Juice Beauty, $48
If your skin is in need of some moisture, Juice Beauty’s Antioxidant Serum will fit the bill. A blend of fatty acid-rich oils provides the ultimate moisture boost, combined with aloe, which is known to improve skin hydration.
Best Vegan Serum for Sensitive Skin
Bare Facial Serum by Root Science, $50
This serum by Root Science promises to soothe, nourish, and balance, all with an ingredient list specially formulated for those with hypersensitive skin. You needn’t worry about your skin feeling oily or clogged with this stuff, which is fast-absorbing and free of essential oils.
Oh Mega Calming Chia Oil by One Love Organics, $49
I was a little surprised to see chia seed extract among the ingredients in this serum, but it actually makes sense, since chia seeds are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, known for nourishing the skin. Best of all, this serum was developed to be used on sensitive skin.
Best Vegan Serum for Oily Skin
Smooth A+ Perfecting Serum by Blissoma, $34
This Correcting Serum by Blissoma is oil-free, instead using an herbal blend to help treat an oily complexion. Containing rose, coriander, goldenrod, fennel, and yarrow, this serum works hard to cleanse stubborn pores. Plus, the rose/bergamot/frankincense combo smells amazing!
Hero Oil by Poetic Blend, $50
If I’ve learned one thing over the past year, it’s this: you can put oil on oily skin. The Hero Oil by Poetic Blend proves this to be true–the serum is weightless and absorbs quickly, so you won’t feel like you’re walking around with oil slathered on your face. Instead, the natural blend of botanical oils will help fight and reduce excessive oil production.
