Thanksgiving is without a doubt *the* most quintessentially American holiday. It’s also the hardest holiday to adopt if you’re not born here. My family and I moved to Portland when I was nine, so growing up, Thanksgiving just felt dreary to me. I have a lot of memories of bitterly cold and rainy days with not-so-great attempts at traditional Thanksgiving food. But then I grew up and moved to the city, and my sister and I started having Friends-style Thanksgiving with my boyfriend and her then-boyfriend (now husband). Back then I was 22 (basically, an infant) and my sister was 27, and our guys were hale and hearty New York bachelors who celebrated Thanksgiving by going to a restaurant for a prix fixe meal. But then we cooked and ate and came together, and for every year since. That’s how Thanksgiving finally started to mean something for me. And now we’re a family together! Awww.
