In my pursuit to create the perfect kitty-friendly treat for the Peaceful Dumpling Chief Assistant Zeus, I stumbled upon a few ingredients that I had lying around my kitchen. After a bit of research on what cats can safely ingest (which in case you were wondering does not include things like yarn, bottle cap pieces and popcorn–all things my cats have eaten over the years…yum) I discovered that sweet potatoes and carrots are super healthy for cats! Sweet potatoes provide Vitamin A, Vitamin C and Iron and carrots provide nutrients like Vitamin A and Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine, which is important in helping cats’ bodies create proteins). Here is my easy recipe for kitty treats that are vegan, healthy and yum (although cats typically should not follow a totally vegan diet, these treats are totally safe in moderation–just ask Zeus!)
Carrot and Sweet Potato Kitty Treats
(Enough for about 2 weeks worth of kitty treats if served one by one or two by two)
1/2 large carrot, peeled and diced
1/2 sweet potato, peeled and diced
1 tsp. vegetable oil
1 tsp. brown sugar
1/2 tsp. whole wheat flour
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
Preheat oven to 500F
Mix carrots and sweet potatoes in small bowl with vegetable oil
Add brown sugar, whole wheat flour and mix until veggies are lightly coated
Spread out in one single layer on a lightly greased foil wrapped baking pan and sprinkle with cinnamon
Bake for 25-30 minutes or until crispy
Remove from oven and let cool for at least 1 hour
Remove foil and shake treats into an airtight baggie or plastic container and store in refrigerator until your kitty does something extra cute and deserves one (or ten, we don’t judge here)
Meow-tastic! (<< obligatory)
